The company was started in 1973 when two college students in Spencer, Idaho mined and sold loose stones to local rock-hounds and jewelers. The company soon learned that the stones were easier to sell if moutned in jewelry.

As the business grew, the company sought out, and found, other sources for quality Opal jewelry, first looking to Australia and then to gem centers in Asia.
